Retiree Income Tax

Property Tax Exemption
Veterans with discharges other than dishonorable are eligible for exemptions either on their real estate tax or motor vehicle tax bills. These exemptions fall under seven categories:
- Regular veterans’ exemption
- Unmarried widow/widower of a qualified veteran
- Veterans’ exemption for total disability due to service-connected disability
- Veterans’ exemption for partial disability due to service-connected disability
- Gold Star parents’ exemption
- Prisoner of war exemption
- Specially adapted housing exemption
The amounts of exemptions differ depending on the category and location.
Free Vehicle Registration for Disabled Veterans
Any veteran who has been honorably discharged and has lost the use of one or more limbs is entitled to a lifetime exemption from annual vehicle registration and licensing fees. This exemption also applies to totally disabled veterans.
Rhode Island Veterans Education Benefits
Rhode Island Free Tuition for Disabled Veterans
Rhode Island resident veterans with a service-connected disability ranging from 10% to 100% receive tuition-free education at Rhode Island’s public colleges and universities. However, they must first apply for and utilize any available financial aid.
Rhode Island Veterans Recreation Benefits
Disabled Veterans Hunting and Fishing Licenses
Every veteran classified as 100% disabled is eligible to receive a complimentary hunting and fishing license. Residence in Rhode Island is not a requirement.
Active Duty Hunting and Fishing Licenses
Non-resident military personnel stationed in Rhode Island are eligible to obtain hunting and fishing licenses at the resident rate.
State Park Admission
Veterans who have a 100% disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are granted free access to Rhode Island state parks. However, fees for camping, picnicking, and equestrian activities still apply. Residency in Rhode Island is not a prerequisite for eligibility.
Rhode Island Veterans’ Cemetery
Located in Exeter, the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery is open to honorably discharged Rhode Island wartime veterans, as well as 20-year retirees from the National Guard or Reserve components. Additionally, certain spouses and dependents may qualify for burial services.
