North Carolina offers various benefits for veterans. On this page, you’ll find a concise overview of each of these benefits.

North Carolina State Veterans Homes

North Carolina operates four state veterans homes located in Black Mountain, Fayetteville, Kinston, and Salisbury. Eligibility for admission is open to honorably discharged North Carolina resident veterans. Admission requires either a doctor’s referral or proof of disability. Additionally, there is an associated fee for admission.

North Carolina Veteran Financial Benefits

Income Tax

All military retirement and SBP (Survivor Benefit Plan) payments are exempt from taxation.

Property Tax

Honorably discharged North Carolina veterans who are rated 100% permanently and totally disabled by the VA qualify for a deduction of up to $45,000 in the assessed value of their home for property tax purposes. The surviving spouse is also eligible if they are receiving Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) from the VA.

Vehicle Highway Tax

Disabled veterans are not required to pay the highway tax on vehicles that have been specially adapted by the VA to accommodate their disabilities.

North Carolina State Employment Benefits

State Employment Veterans Preference

Preference in state government employment is granted to wartime veterans, spouses of disabled veterans, and surviving spouses of disabled veterans or of veterans who died in action or due to service-connected disability.

North Carolina Assistive Technology Program (NCATP)

NCATP, a state program within the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, aids veterans with disabilities in their transition to civilian life. It offers assistive technology device demonstrations, short-term device loans, assessments, training, public awareness initiatives, and technical assistance to individuals and their families.

Business Link North Carolina (BLNC)

BLNC collaborates with the NC Department of Commerce, offering complimentary services to assist veterans and anyone interested in launching a small business.

North Carolina Scholarship for Children of Wartime Veterans

The scholarship covers eight academic semesters, and recipients have eight years to utilize these semesters. To be eligible, the child must be under 25 years old when applying and a resident of North Carolina. Additionally, the veteran must have served during wartime or be a disabled veteran.

North Carolina Veteran Recreation Benefits

Hunting and Fishing Licenses

Veterans with a disability rating of 50% or higher are eligible to obtain a lifetime hunting and fishing license, with prices ranging from $10 to $110 depending on the specific type of license.

Active Duty Hunting & Fishing

North Carolina residents serving on active duty outside the state who are home on leave for 30 days or less are exempt from purchasing a license. Additionally, active duty members and their families stationed in North Carolina are eligible to purchase hunting and fishing licenses at the resident rate.

North Carolina State Veterans Cemeteries

North Carolina boasts four state veterans cemeteries: Black Mountain, Goldsboro, Jacksonville, and Spring Lake. Honorably discharged North Carolina veterans are eligible for complimentary burial services, while there is a nominal fee for spouses.
