NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE VETERAN BENEFITS

New Hampshire Veterans Home
The New Hampshire Veterans Home, situated in Tilton, welcomes honorably discharged veterans who are residents of NH and have served for a minimum of 90 days during wartime. Admission is contingent upon meeting certain criteria, including restrictions related to assets and medical care.
New Hampshire Veteran Financial Benefits
Global War on Terrorism Bonus
Honorably discharged residents of New Hampshire who served on active duty from September 11, 2001, onwards and received the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, or Iraq Campaign Medal are eligible for a $100 bonus. Applicants must have been New Hampshire residents upon entering active duty. While the program officially concluded on June 11, 2009, there are provisions in place to consider applications submitted after this date.
Property Tax Exemption
Veterans who served during wartime, along with their spouses or widows, may qualify for a property tax credit of $51 ($100 if both are eligible veterans). Cities or towns have the option to increase this credit to a maximum of $750 by vote.
Widows of veterans who were killed in action may be entitled to a tax credit ranging from $700 to $2,000 on real estate or personal property.
A tax credit of $701 is granted on the residence of a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition, including being a double amputee, paraplegic, or unremarried surviving spouse. Municipalities have the authority to elevate this credit to a maximum of $4,000 through a vote.
Furthermore, a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled, blind, paraplegic, or a double amputee due to service, and owns a specially adapted home acquired with VA assistance or proceeds from the sale of a prior homestead obtained with VA assistance, is exempt from all property taxes on the residence. This exemption extends to the veteran’s surviving spouse as well.
Indigent Veterans
Veterans of war and their families who lack the means to sustain themselves may receive assistance at public expense within the municipality of their residence.
New Hampshire Veteran Employment Preference
Preference is granted to honorably discharged veterans in the hiring process for city, town, and district positions. Similarly, preference is extended to veterans when appointing employees for roles within the State Liquor Commission, the State Veterans Council, as well as the Commandant and staff of the New Hampshire Veterans Home. Additionally, certain spouses and unremarried surviving spouses may also be eligible for this preference.
New Hampshire Veterans Peddler’s License Fee Exemption
Veterans with service-connected disabilities and their unremarried spouses may qualify for exemption from fees associated with obtaining a peddler’s license.
New Hampshire Veteran Education Benefits
New Hampshire National Guard Tuition Assistance:
Active members of the New Hampshire National Guard have the opportunity to enroll in state-supported postsecondary schools and attend courses tuition-free, subject to availability.
Free Tuition for Surviving Children of Military Members
Dependents of military members who perish during wartime service, as well as offspring of specific wartime veterans who pass away due to service-related disabilities, may be eligible for tuition-free enrollment at New Hampshire colleges.
Moreover, they have the opportunity to receive a scholarship of up to $2,500 annually, covering expenses such as room/board/rent, books, and supplies for a maximum duration of 4 years. Eligible children must fall within the age range of 16 to 25.

Fish and Game Licenses
Veterans who are honorably discharged residents of New Hampshire and are permanently and totally disabled by the VA can receive a complimentary lifetime hunting and fishing license.
Furthermore, patients at the VA Medical Center in Manchester, NH, and residents of the NH Veterans’ Home may be eligible for free fishing permits under specific circumstances.
Disabled veterans may also be permitted to hunt from motor vehicles or boats under certain conditions with the appropriate permit.
State Park Admission
Veterans who are honorably discharged residents of New Hampshire and are permanently and totally disabled by the VA can receive a complimentary lifetime hunting and fishing license.

All veterans, regardless of residency, are eligible for interment at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen. While there is a fee for interment, spouses of veterans are also eligible for burial at the cemetery.
